Luke 22:35-37

  1. And he said to them, When I sent you without purse, and money, and shoes, lacked you any thing? And they said, Nothing.
  2. Then said he to them, But now, he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his money: and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
  3. For I say to you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

This is right after Jesus tells peter that “I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that you shall thrice deny that you know me.” Luke 22:34. So we know that:

  • Jesus is going to be crucified soon
  • Before this, people where welcoming to his disciples and covering their needs along their mission
  • Therefore although his disciples carried nothing with, their needs were covered throgh people whom they met

Now Jesus is warning his disciples that he is going to be crucified. The purpose of Luke 22:35-37 is not to dishearten a christian that he will not receive help from God and that from crucifixion of Jesus till end times, Christians are on their own. But to tell his disciples that the time of being favored by people and supported by them wherever they are going is passed. Now it is the time they will be hated by people. As it then goes on to say that even him, being their master will be classified as a criminal Luke 22:37:

  1. For I say to you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors -

Where the master is being crucified, how do you expected his servants to be treated?

This is in accordance with Matthew 24:9: “Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and you shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.”

Luke 22:35-37 does not mean the end of receiving help from God. But it means the end of being welcomed by people for being disciples of Jesus and beginning of quite an opposite era. It is obvious that Jesus continues to help his disciples in their mission later. For example II Corinthians 12:9:

  1. And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

We should know that during our lives, we can expect help from Jesus. But not from the world.
